Ingredients Safety Alert – Triclosan

Next time you are buying soap or antibacterial gels, take a look at the ingredient list and make sure it does not have Triclosan. Triclosan is actually a pesticide used in most “antibacterial” products.

“Widespread use of this pesticide {Triclosan} in consumer products is causing toxic pollution in our bodies and our waterways, and is contributing to rising rates of “superbacteria” that are resistant to antibiotics. And here’s the real kicker: studies show that triclosan-based antibacterial soaps are no more effective at preventing disease than washing with plain old soap and water.”

Tapped: A closer look at the effects of Bottled Water

So many of the products we use daily in our life, we blindly assume are safe for us to consume, use, etc. It is so easy to think because you are buying it from a store in the United States, the government has reviewed, approved, its sale so it must be okay for me to buy/use it. If you have not seen or heard about the documentary Tapped, please check it out. Below is a link to watch the trailer for the documentary:

Take Action: The Tapped website has a few links for things you can do to take action. I have signed the Declaration to limit my use of bottled water. You can ask well on their website: go to Take Action, then click Sign the Declaration.

Just Joined HillTop Farms CSA for 2011

I am super excited to have finally made my selection for a CSA this year. You might be asking, what is a CSA? CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture meaning you can get your weekly veggies and fruits from local farmers.

I have chose to try HillTop Farms in Willow Springs, NC. They are currently still accepting new members if you want to sign up as well. Check out their website to learn more. In addition to the health benefits of getting super fresh veggies, they are a Certified Organic Farm. I chose this CSA because of it being an Organic Farm, ease of the program, and flexibility in selection of items each week. I also love that they offer a “Working Share” option. This means you pay a little less for your membership in return for volunteering on the farm for 10 hours. I can’t wait!

To find a CSA near you, you can check out these websites:
Local Harvest – To find farmers’ markets, family farms, & other sources of sustainably grown food in your area, where you can buy produce, grass-fed meats, and many other goodies.
NC Specific – Carolina Farm Stewardship Association – Promoting local & organic agriculture in the Carolinas by inspiring, educating and organizing farmers and consumers.
NC Specific – Toxic Free NC
