Part 1: The Many Faces of Arizona (day 4)
Yesterday we meandered all over the diverse landscapes of Arizona. I can’t believe that everything we saw yesterday was in one state. I have been to Arizona before, but did not expect to see all of this wrapped up into one state. I felt like I was in different states at times. We went in search of Route 66, to the Petrified National Forest, Flagstaff, Sadona, and ended at the Grand Canyon. Here is our route.
First story of the day: The Search for Route 66
So I read online that there was this really picturesque section of Route 66 between Pinta and the Petrified forest. So instead of taking 40 to the Forest, I wanted to take Route 66 from Pinta. We started driving from Gallup, NM and quickly got to the Pinta exit. Getting off the exit, the road twisted a bit and then the cement ended to just a dirt road. The truck stopped…what to do? The website didn’t warn about a dirt road or traitorous travel to get there…Should we keep going or turn around? Knowing me, Justin knew I wanted to keep going, so without saying a word, the started to drive forward. Both of us silently worried that this treasure hunt might come to a bad end with us getting stuck in the mud in the middle of the desert or with nowhere to turn our tahoe and Uhaul around if the road ended…
The dirt road looked worse to the eye than it actually felt. It was pretty smooth as long as you drove slow. It also helped that our nav showed the roads that we were embarking on so that gave me hope that Route 66 would still be there as the website explained. We got to Route 66 to find the shell of a road. Most of the pavement had disintegrated to crumbles of pebbles making it like a gravel road. We looked at each other and continued on. This section of the old Route 66 was one lane with not much forgiveness. It was very narrow and the small to large bushes/plants, etc. growing through the pavement along the edges made the road even skinnier. 5-10 mph is as fast as we could go. Noticing that I-40 was an earshot away and we could see all the cars whizzing by off in the distance, Justin was not enjoying the adventure as much as I was. I wanted the authenticity of the real Route 66, not the remade commercialized version.
We kept forging ahead as the tire marks of other brave souls showed in the gravel ahead making both of us believe other people have traveled this road recently and made it. My secondary goal for this trip down Route 66 was the ruins of the Painted Desert Trading Post, a popular stop along Route 66. After driving 5-10 mph for 3 or so miles, we finally made it.
From the trading post, the Petrified Forest was about 4-6 miles away or we could turn around to head back to 40. We decided to keep going forward. The road got even more narrow and less traveled as went forward. We passed over a bridge and by an old wooden house which I imagine would have been where the owners of the Trading Post lived. We kept going as there was really no turning back at this point. The road had no shoulder and the bushes on the edges would have made it impossible to turn around. Then what you would expect happened. We came to the closed gate of the Petrified Forest – no entry! UGGGGG. Luckily others came to the same result as there were tracks of other cars looping around to head back. I wish the website would have mentioned this tiny, important fact. So we headed all the way back to Pinta Road. Thank God for no flat tires, crumbling bridges, or other mishaps as it would be hard to explain to a toe truck how to pick us up. It was a crazy little trip, one I won’t forget.
More to come about the rest of the day later…..
Day 3: OK to NM
Yesterday we left Clinton, OK to head through Amarillo and Albuquerque. We stopped just shy of the NM border in Gallup, NM. Here is our route.
Amarillo has a cute logo using their city name. I saw it on a billboard and painted on a bridge. With traffic, I couldn’t catch a photograph of it so I found it online to share with you.

There was much more variance today in the terrain which made the drive fun. We went from very desolate areas to lush green, flat for miles to rock formations, and no buildings to cities.
McLean, TX. Practically a ghost town, we searched for a little diner to eat breakfast with no luck. There was one intersection which looks like it once was the main shopping area but most were closed now. The town had an erie feel to it with all the abandoned businesses. The main stop in this town was the old Phillips 66 gas station. We then headed out to find a functioning gas station which turned our to be a gas station/restaurant. When you first walked in everyone knew you were not from there for two reasons: they didn’t personally know us by name and we didn’t have on cowboy hats and heel spurs.
I think the whole sheriff department was there having breakfast along with a lot of locals.

1st Phillips 66 Station in Texas

Cadillac Ranch. Keego got a chance to stretch his leggs too. Look at the dust he is kicking up lol. He had fun!

Route 66 Relics. We found a section of the actual Route 66. The glory days of Route 66 has passed but left behind memories on the side of the road.

Owl Cafe, Albuquerque, NM. We found this place thanks to Matt. (You can see Jill and Matt’s wedding photos on my blog too.) I had the original green chili burger. Pretty tasty.

Playing with lights as we were driving at night.

Today we will be spending most of the day in Arizona. Lots we want to see there so more pics to come later! Oh and on a personal note, you know your husband loves you when the hotel room only has one big bath towel and he uses a hand towel to dry off to leave you the bigger towel.
Day Two: TN to OK
We started off at 11 degrees yesterday and drove through the cold front to 68 degrees! What a huge temperature swing for one day! Here is a map of our route for yesterday.

We started in Hurricane, TN and made it to Clinton, OK just about 50 miles to go until the OK – TX border. We went through Memphis, Little Rock, and Oklahoma City. Today we finally got to see part of where Route 66 use to run. We stopped at Ann’s Chicken Fry House in Oklahoma City for dinner off the old Route 66. This part of “Route 66″ is pretty developed and I didn’t even see a sign mentioning Route 66.
I only knew because of the research I had done earlier online that 39th Street was where Route 66 was located in Oklahoma City. There were also a lot of restaurants playing off the Route 66 theme along this stretch so that would be the other clue. Ann’s was cute, but all I have to say is bring your appetite. We could have split our dinners. The portions were SO HUGE! I fell like that is the most french fries I ever ate at one time in my life!
Happy Trails: the start of our road trip to San Francisco
I am sitting in a Best Western right now. Kudos to them for accepting dogs and offering free internet. It is weird to have your dog with you at a hotel. This was Keego’s first experience and to say the least he was utterly confused. Now he has settled in to the idea. I think having his dish, bed, toys, bones, etc. helped out. Yep, he is spoiled.
Yesterday we headed out from Raleigh and passed through Asheville, Knoxville, and Nashville. Here is a map of our route.

We didn’t stop on any side trips yet. So all photographs below were from the car as we passed by. With the temp being at a frigid 17-24 degrees (what is the temp up north if it is 17 degrees here?!???!) and the threat of even more snow, we didn’t want to get stuck anywhere. I think we went pretty far considering we left around 11, ran into snow, and went through mountains towing a small Uhaul. Today we will be traveling through the rest of Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and maybe a smidgin of Texas. Happy trails!
Keego at the start of the trip…

The next week
Happy Monday everyone. I can’t believe it is already Monday. Only a few more days and we hit the road for San Francisco! So much to do yet! I wanted to give a heads up that my availably this week and part of next week will be a little spotty. So please be patient with me as I am not sure if I will have internet access each day to respond to emails. I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. Don’t worry I am not ignoring you.
Like I mentioned I hope to be able to post updates at the end of the day and promise to as long as I can find an internet signal. The rest of my time before I leave is pretty packed with a few sessions, editing, orders, and meetings before I head out this week. If you have placed an order, I promise to try to get everything processed before I leave. Have a great week!
When the lights go down in the city, and the sun shines on the bay…
Well I have some exciting news to share with you! I wanted to let you know that we are in the process of moving. Our house sold really fast and I have been having trouble deciding what I wanted to do as far as where to live next. This year I have a number of weddings across the US so I will be pretty mobile. Justin, my husband will be traveling to Manila a lot for work so I was torn between staying in Raleigh or moving closer to him so traveling to see him would not be a 25 hour trip one way from Raleigh.
I just finally decided that I am going to move to San Francisco to be closer to Justin and more centrally located. My phone number/email/website/blog will all stay the same. The only contact info that will change will be my mailing address & I will keep you up to date on that. I’ll be traveling all around the US for weddings and back to Raleigh numerous times so it will be an exciting year! More to come…
Road Trip!!!
Justin and I will start our road-trip in early February, date yet TBD. Once we head out, I’ll try to write posts each night so you can track our progress.
Have something you need to mail to me? My current address is good through the first week in February. Make sure that if you do have anything to pop in the mail to me to send it out soon. Otherwise, you can send it to my new address. I will have my new address available shortly.
Sara & Lio – more to share
Good morning. I hope 2009 is off to a good start for you. I wanted to post a few more from Sara and Lio’s wedding to share with you. My first post was a sneak peek after the wedding, but I wanted to share more with you now. Here are some really cute ones of Sara, her family, and a deeper glimpse into their wedding day. The weather was perfect in San Francisco.

Are you friends or family of Sara & Lio?
